South Africa: First graduates leave Umicare Remedial School
A major step towards breaking the vicious circle of under-education, unemployment and poverty.

After only one year, Umicare’s dedicated remedial school staff, supported by a number of Umicore employees, has provided youngsters with the education and care needed to return to their normal state schools. 
All these Umicare Kids, from grades 1 to 3, came from disadvantaged backgrounds and lacked basic skills in arithmetic, reading and writing. Coupled with their difficulties to concentrate and express themselves, they faced certain failure in the school system and a probable future of unemployment and poverty.
This graduation shows that by tackling the problem early, youngsters can return to school with confidence. Umicare knows that it is only a first step and will continue to support them during their difficult transition.
